A strawberry and banana smoothie is great on its own, but when you add maca powder, it takes it to a whole new level. These two fruits, along with maca powder, blend perfectly together to transpire a nutritious and delicious smoothie bowl. It’s a great breakfast, snack, or post-workout fuel.
What is maca?
Maca powder is highly nutritious, loaded with vitamins, and has so many benefits. It also increases energy and is loaded with fiber, to keep your digestive system happy. Plus, maca has a nutty flavor, which makes it a perfect addition to this smoothie bowl recipe.
Key ingridents
This maca smoothie bowl only requires 5 ingredients and takes less than 5 minutes to make.
- Strawberries: Strawberries are packed with antioxidants and contain several vitamins.
- Banana: A frozen banana adds sweetness and creaminess to this smoothie bowl.
- Non-dairy milk: You only need a little liquid to blend, since it’s a smoothie bowl. I used unsweetened almond milk, but you can use any non-dairy milk that you enjoy.
- Maca powder: the essential ingredient for this maca smoothie bowl.
- Flaxseeds: Flaxseeds are loaded with nutrients, high in omega-3 fats, rich in dietary fiber, and you can’t even taste them. They are completely optional, so no problem if you don’t have them…yet!
How to make this smoothie bowl
This Strawberry Maca Smoothie Bowl is so simple to make. It just takes no time to enjoy this delicious and nutritious treat.
Combine all the smoothie ingredients to a high-speed blender. Blend on high, until smooth. The texture should be thick.

Transfer to a chilled bowl. Top with chocolate coconut granola and melted dark chocolate chips.

Toppings
It wouldn’t be a smoothie bowl, without toppings. I topped my Strawberry Maca Smoothie Bowl with my homemade chocolate coconut granola and a drizzle of melted dark chocolate, but you can top your maca smoothie bowl treat with whatever you like!
- Granola: chocolate coconut granola, almond joy granola, peanut butter granola, or any granola that you have on hand.
- Dairy-free dark chocolate chips, melted or sprinkled
- Chopped dark chocolate
- Shredded coconut or coconut flakes
- Fresh or frozen berries
- Sliced banana
- Nut butter: almond butter, creamy peanut butter, SunButter, pecan butter, hazelnut butter, etc.
- Nuts: almonds, peanuts, sunflower seeds, pecans, hazelnuts, walnuts, etc.
Fresh versus frozen fruit
The key to making thick and creamy smoothie bowls is by using frozen fruit. Using frozen fruits will thicken your smoothie, so that you can add toppings, without them sinking. Also, don’t add too much liquid, because it is a smoothie bowl after all. I usually start with a little non-dairy milk and add more, if needed, until I reach the desired thickness.
Tips for making the perfect smoothie bowl
- Use frozen fruit to achieve a thick consistency.
- Start off by only adding 1/3 cup of non-dairy milk and only add more if needed.
- Use a high-speed blender, with a tamper, to ensure that your smoothie bowl achieves a thick and creamy texture.
- Place your serving bowl in the freezer before you begin preparing this recipe and remove it when smoothie is ready. This will ensure that your smoothie bowl stays cold as you enjoy it.
Smoothie bowl Q/As
Can I make it a smoothie?
Absolutely! This smoothie bowl can be as thick or as thin as you desire. Increase the liquid from 1/3 cup to 1 cup, to make it a smoothie.
Can I add protein powder?
Yes! To increase the protein content of this smoothie bowl, add a scoop of your favorite protein powder. Both chocolate and a vanilla flavor for this maca smoothie bowl recipe will work.
What can I use if I don’t have maca powder?
Since maca, is the key ingredient for this smoothie bowl, there is no other substitute. However, you can leave it entirely.
Can I make this smoothie bowl banana free?
Certainly, replace the frozen banana with a 1/2-1 cup of frozen cauliflower.
Can I make this smoothie bowl in advance?
Unfortunately, no. I do not recommend making this Strawberry Maca Smoothie Bowl in advance. However, you can definitely prep all the ingredients, the night before, by adding them to a zip lock bag. That way, in the morning, all you need to do is add the ingredients, along with non-dairy milk, to your blender.
